Dcotor/Patient Relation

Any health difficulty is hard espcially when it becomes chronic and consumes your life. Recently a dental issue has led me down a very long journey and yet, I understand better now what my women with fertility issues go through. The path can be long and twisted and seeking out the right doctor/doctors to help along the way can be even harder.

You hope to find one knowledgeable but approachable, caring and empathetic to your needs. Many of my couples go out of state and even out of the country, especially when they turn 40 with their fertility issues. Being able to connect with your practitioner is key. This is also one big difference between Western Medicine and practicing Chinese Medicine, often we have more time to listen, to hear what is beyond the physical symptoms of our patient. Miscarriage is probably one of the most difficult situations to face and the fear of it occuring can even be more stifling. This is where encouragement and reassuance really helps my patients out. Advanced maternal age is another category extremely difficult to face with little time on their side.

We all need encouragement, reassurance and guidance no matter what the health circumstance may be, that we are on the path to health especially from our doctors. It also sometimes means being able to tell the truth if the treatment is appropriate or not, needs further testing, treatment time or just plain " We or I really do not know for sure" or "you need to proceed in this direction ultimately or to face a certain fact about your health situation". Having the integrity and empathy to communicate this is part of our jobs and part of the Hippocratic oath. I also believe the Doctor/patient relation is so important to the healing process, and can often lead to better overall outcome. If the doctor is aloof, distant or noncommunicative this makes it difficult for the patient to be a part of the treatment protocal. Doctors that include you in that process help you to be a part of the team, in accomplishing the healhty result you aim to achieve.

I always try to empower my patients with what they can do on their own, it helps me to help them better. Taking the time to find out where they are at and what is going on and what concerns they may have. Making the patient feel comfortable and encouraging him to follow or comply with the treatment protocal laid out is an ongoing process with forward steps and many times backwards. Sometimes the patient gives up before the goal is reached as the treatment is too time involved or exspensive and you can see they are at the end of their rope or not communicating anymore with you especially cause our treatment with Acupuncture and herbs is not a quick fix or a surgical procedure or strategy. None the less you plug away as my teacher Jane Lyttleton an Ausie from Sydney always says. Her demeanor and wisdom is an honor to our profession and to all in this healing medicinal art. I strive to become the healing practitioner that she is with her soft spoken, extremely wise manner. She was a former scienctist with NASA.

May Peace Fill Your Hearts...

Starting to think about Chrsitmas. Getting all dreamy....where is your heart this Christmas?
Bring Peace where there is distress and anger and love where there is sadness and from these joy unfolds on its own and hope is renewed. Fill your heart with joy and wonder. The Skies in this picture look like the Northern Lights which are seen in Marquette, MI my home town quite often. Plus I love Polar Bears. Merry Chirstmas Everyone….may peace fill your hearts and joy. Remember God always leads us. Do not be afraid he will take you there and more places than you can imagine.

Gut Brain Connection…..Leaky Gut Commonly Associated With Infertility As Well

It just goes to show the importance of eating something fermented daily even for kids.
Might be Yogurt with no sugar added, Kefir, Kombucha drinks, Sauerkraut, Kimchi(which I have not tried yet) or taking a Probiotic Supplement but always best to get your nutrients from a food source. Just think your kid will think clearer. Especially if he/she has had a history of antibiotic consumption, as I heavily did as a kid, till I realized too quick these things do not even work, cause why I am always sick, and then moody, in a brain fog. So You Do Not Even Have To Be Autistic to feel the effects of not enough bacteria in your gut. This is weird I know, but after eating my homemade sauerkraut, several times I notice how clear and focused I was!

Treatment for autism may one day come in the form of a probiotic - live, 'friendly' bacteria like those found in yogurt.

RISK OF INFERTILITY WENT UP 85% IN WOMEN WHO ATE LOW FAT DAIRY AND SKIM MILK...
"A study at the Harvard School of Public Health found that women who ate two or more servings of low-fat dairy foods per day, particularly skim milk and yogurt, increased their risk of infertility by more than 85 percent compared with women who ate less than one serving of low-fat dairy food per week."

Studies show that full-fat dairy not only doesn't contribute to obesity, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease, it may even help prevent them.

HAPPY CONCEIVING….

When woman I work with, really take the time to consistently eat well and cut out the refined sugars, alcohol, coffee, glutens, eat more hormone free, grass fed protein, organic greens and healthy carbs like root vegies and some fruit, get some exercise in, good sleep and decreased stress, I believe they double their chances of conceiving along with the acupuncture and herbs twice a week for at least 3 months. If you are doing the above only here and there, the success is not as quick if at all. Plus you will feel the difference in how you feel! A little discpline goes a long ways. Might be tough at first but the results are pretty rewarding in more ways than one!

HAPPY CONCEIVING….

WE ARE WHAT WE EAT….

Eating well is such a huge part of my life now and has made such a difference in how I think and feel. So when clients come in, they all know, I almost always ask what they had to eat? Why?? Because we are what we eat!! Acupuncture helps to balance us out but if your diet is still hit or miss and you are skimping on food for sake of speed, money and "no feel like cooking"……sorry but it will affect you and catch up with you PDQ. It absolutely has to be your number one priority whether you are trying to conceive or just trying to make it thru the stresses of life, let alone infertility! But make it fun! Key is to plan ahead, buy the groceries then be motivated to cook. Tonight was one of those nights where I just could not get motivated but I came up with an easy pineapple/rosemary topped pork chops wrapped in bacon with sliced sweet potatoes baked along the side and a dark leafy green salad made for a savory dish with of course my pumpkin pie custard for dessert. Oh and I felt soooo much better after this meal. Picked my dumpy mood up right away. Now for a walk. Sleep well.

HAPPY THANKSGIVING!

I made this savory pumkin pie custard in small ramekins this weekend and after the last of 4 of them tonight, I decided yum, it tastes just like Mom's pumpkin pie without the crust!
And best yet, it is as easy as pie if not easier to make, no crusty mess if you know what I mean and lighter on the tummy. Now I just need a larger ramekin to bake it in, to share on Thanksgiving day. It is super easy to make other than making sure you have enough water to fill the pan you baked them in. I baked them for an hour and would probably make extra to fill the dishes up a tad more. Coconut milk(full fat), 2 eggs, maple syrup, vanila, cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg and of course pumpkin puree(I used the organic canned)
Happy Thanksgiving and Eat Well!!

Life Emerges From Nothingness…..or so it seems…..from stillness within…from the essence of God

Jesus says "be still and see"

I love what Morgan Freeman here says about "learning how to be still and let life happen", most of us live in resistance of what happens to us especially the obstacles along our path and yet all of it, even our mistakes lead us in the right direction when we are not in resistance or fear. Okay so something did not work out. Stop for a second and just be still before acting right away….you will be surprised how you will be led just by being quiet and still. Then from this place of serene peace, life emerges on its own. Much like the women in the last several weeks that announced their thrill of pregnancy. Nothing delights me more. Thank you God and keep them safe in your heart.

DID YOU KNOW THAT IN THE FIRST 12 WEEKS OF PREGNANCY A BABY IS TOTALLY DEPENDENT ON MOM'S THYROID?

Thyroid hormone is critical to normal development of the baby’s brain and nervous system. During the first trimester, the fetus depends on the mother’s supply of thyroid hormone, which comes through the placenta. At around 12 weeks, the baby’s thyroid begins to function on its own.

In this article, it says how the baby is strictly dependent on the Mother's thyroid hormone in the first 10-12 weeks.

Inositol and PCOS

Inositol and PCOS

Even if you do not have PCOS, Myoinositol is proving to be beneficial for Fertility. Between stress and the modern American diet, we all have degrees of subclinical Metabolic syndrome. Most of us love our carbs. Even on a Paleo regimen, when you have waited too long to eat and your body is screaming for food but your too famished to prepare that protein satisfying, dish with vegies, you may find yourself like me, grabbing an apple with almond butter because lo and behold you waited too long to eat, despite a quick energy pick up that is never sustaining, so you just eat more quick carbs. This use to be my trend of eating. Hence relying on carb support for energy, creating an underlying set up for more insulin output, leading to more insulin resistance or poor insulin receptivity within the cells. For me this led to my gum disease. Had I continued eating this way and not found Paleo, I might even have diabetes by now. Dont' be fooled that eating natural sugars like fruit, honey, stevia or natural maple syrups is better. In fact, fructose is sometimes harder on the liver if eaten in excess. Lesson most of us Americans need to learn, to prevent this cycle, is, don't wait to eat and do not skip protein, fat rich meals so you do not get to the point that your blood sugar is dipping. Yes, I said fats cause they are what really sustain your hunger, like bone broth. And be sure to include plenty of water soluble greens and root vegetables as your best source of carbs. Prepare ahead of time. You will feel less burnt out and more balanced. Even hypo-glycemia can lead to pre-diabetic issues. Perhaps Myoinositol can help with the cascading events that can lead to subclinical or full fledged clinical issues of PCOS and other ovarian issues of infertility and insulin resistance but I always say start with diet first.

Fish Eggs….For Fertility….Worth the Eat!

Did you know Caviar is excellent for Fertility, afterall these are eggs and nutrient dense! Creme Fraiche is also full of good bacteria for your gut flora. Keeping the gut healthy is central to all other systems in the body.

With nothing else to eat in my fridge, I broke down and indulged in my birthday gift finally, after close to a month. I must say I have never tasted creme fraiche but it made this exsquisite Almas Caviar Hackleback a delight on a nongluten cracker. Can I expose that I ate all of the caviar? Hey you never know, these fish eggs might help me conceive again! A big Thank you to the special couple who gave them to me. May God help their dream come true! Amen.

"Depression a Disease or a Symptom of Inflammation?"

The Chemical Myth of Depression and other mental health conditions…..and Big Pharma and a new look at the effects of inflamation. Leave it to Chris to do the research. The most recent research supports a new theory called the "Immune Cytokine Model of Depression" holding that it is a "multifaceted sign of chronic immune system activation" and not a disease itself.   Immune factors and inflamation are also related to Fertility Issues, many of you know, who suffer from one of the 4 categories of Antiphospholipid Antibodies such as Natural Kller Cells and MTHFR factor.

Healthy and Happy Baby!

Hi Carolyn! We wanted to share the good news! Noah Graham arrived today 7/22/14, weighing 7lbs, 15 oz, 21.5 inches long. Healthy and happy!

Thank you for everything!!!!

This baby's Mom had acupuncture for a couple months prior to his conception and continued throughout her first trimester.  I cannot wait to meet him!

Excellent Ultrasound and Good Heartbeat of Fetus at 12 weeks. A Big Stepping Stone to Cross.

A sigh of relief at 12 weeks with a good Ultrasound and Heartbeat to confirm.  Getting through this first trimester is a big hurdle to cross for couples.  Miscarriage from this point on is less likely to occur.
Always a delight to have my patients share their story.  Thank you!

My fertility story: After a blighted ovum miscarriage, I went through a year of fertility treatments including Clomid and multiple IUIs - and nothing was working - I was not even able to ovulate on my own. I decided to try something different, and that is when I found Carolyn Huffman. She was so kind from the very beginning and the acupuncture and herbs helped to balance my body from any adverse effects of the fertility drugs. She mentioned they also could have helped while I was taking the fertility treatments if I had chosen to continue that course. What impressed me the most is how much she cared, and how she made me feel like I wasn't broken - like there was hope for me to conceive. I started taking the recommended herbs, incorporating more of the Paleo diet, and going to see her every few days. I was able to ovulate on my own the very first month of acupunture. The very next month, I had a positive pregnancy test! I am now into my second trimester. I am so very thankful that I found Ms. Huffman. I would recommend her to anyone!

An Integrative Approach to Fertility, Often the Best Approach in Certain Cases

Often for women who have obstructive issues such as blocked fallopian tubes  due to a prior appendix rupture or pelvic adhesions or males with no sperm production at all, an Integrative Approach is the only alternative for them or their best option.  So for them utilizing an Assisted Reproductive Technique such as Artificial Insemination(IUI) or In-Vitro Fertilization(IVF) with ICSI along with Acupuncture and Chinese Herbs is often their best choice or only choice.

When it involves Male Factor issues of Azoospermia(commonly referred to as "no sperm") often a Testicular Biopsy is required but the acupuncture will help facilitate this procedure and increase the number of sperm that may be there.  This is useful in the case of non-obstructive azoospermia.

In both women and men however with obstructive issues, age related issues such as Premature Ovarian Failure or who have several failed Assited Techniques like IVF, it is best to come for acupuncture at least 6 to 9 months prior to beginning another IVF or an initial IVF procedure to enable the best possible outcome.   In that time period, as Chinese Medicine Practitioners we often are able to balance out their hormones, regulate their cycles, reduce their stress from the failed outcomes and in general, improve their blood and qi supply to the pelvic region, coach them on lifestyle and diet changes that can positively or adversely effect their ability to conceive.  This is especially true if they are able to receive treatments biweekly and even more so if they have had several failed attempts in a row, then we know the whole process along with the hormomal drugs have taken their toll on their bodies emotionally and physically.  In some cases of Premature Ovarian Failure if we are fortunate enough to be able to nourish the ovaries enough that natural conception occurs then IVF may not be necessary.

Epigenetics Role in Gene Expression and It's Importance in Health and Fertility

The importance of nurturing ourselves….to support the expression of how certain genes are turned on or off. Epigenetics is the aspect that allows the outler layers of the gene to be influenced. Acupuncture, nutrition, Chinese Herbs, have been shown to have an epigenetic influence. This is of particular importance to the ovaries and sperm and their role in fertility.

You have heard me speak of this subject time and again because I think it is a hot topic that will be getting more and more hype as we realize we have more influence then we thought on our capacity to influence our cellular structure chromosonally and how this can be passed down to our children.

ACUPUNCTURE POST FAILED IVF & IUI

If you have been thru numerous IVF's or IUI's then consider acupuncture and herbs as way to help your body replenish your blood, yin and fluids, Qi and yang that often become depleted by the medications used in these protocols. They pump you, up but leave your qi, blood, yin/yang depleted as the drugs recruit more follicles and ones that normally are not fit for fertilization.  In a normal cycle a woman would only produce one good follicle but with the additonal Follicle Stimulation Medication(FSH) along with your own body's production of FHS the attempt is to get many more, 10 to 15.
Then too, there is the stress and the sadness of failed attempts. Acupuncture can help your body and mind relax to deal with both of these. Most imbalances in the body are emotionally connected because we tense up and contract and the emotion gets locked in somewhere in the body.  This impedes blood flow to the tissues, muscles and most importantly here the pelvic region.
Most couples think of acupuncture to help them become pregnant either naturally or in combination with an IVF or IUI cycle but fail to realize the importance of it for it's own sake of healing and relaxing to help put you back in balance. Once balanced conception will more likely occur without IVF/IUI or with it.
Come in and recieve $10 off your next visit or herb by mentioning you got this e-mail or message on my facebook page or on my blog here.

LET'S GET TO WORK AND PLANT SOME SEEDS....

GROW A HEALTHY GARDEN = HEALTHY SEEDS OR EGGS. TILL THE SOIL=ACUPUNCTURE/HERBS/DIET TO CLEAR OBSTRUCTIONS, MOVE THE BLOOD, FEED FERTILE TISSUE=PREGNANT=HEALTHY BABY!

SRPING, A TIME TO REPLENISH YIN & ESSENCE, SO YANG THRIVES

Nourishing the Yin in our bodies takes much more time than nourishing the Yang. The Yin correlates with the fluids and blood in our bodies and everyday gets depleted as we age. So when women or men come to me, inevitably along with the constitutional pattern, just by virtue of an inability to conceive, there is an underlying Kidney Essence and Yin deficiency, despite any Liver/Spleen deficiency or Kidney Yang or Qi deficiencies. This takes time to nourish, and fertility drugs, drugs in general, lack of sleep, intake of processed, quick foods, or lack of fresh foods, stress, overwork, working out too hard or much, all deplete the Yin first! You get dehydrated more, wound up, brain fog, blood sugar imbalances, irritable, low libido, dark circles under eyes, dry eyes, night sweats, insomnia, lack of appetite, afraid, vaginal dryness, premature greying of hair. Sound familiar? In our society today we all want quick, that is not how your body got to this place to begin with, it took years. So I ask you to give yourself time to heal, then the body like a garden regenerates, is not so prone to weeds growing in it like fibroids, or cysts or endometriosis.  When the Yin and the blood are nourished, the Qi moves. Because blood is the mother of Qi and if it ain't healthy then the Qi gets stuck and then you have a double wammy of a problem with obstructions like I just mentioned. So when a woman tells me I will come in for acupuncture when I start trying to conceive again......I think boy this is going to be a "Rush Order" and I am not a "Fast Food" Biz. SPRING IS THE TIME TO CULTIVATE, BUT TILL THE SOIL, WATER, FEED IT, THEN PLANT THE SEEDS!!! Make sense? New Moon day to begin!

Mothers

Yummy Paleo Banana Bread!

I made this bread this weekend and I have to say it really tasted great, moist, rich and who would have ever thunk not even any honey or maple syrup just the sweetness from the bananas! However, you can add a little homemade whipped cream to top it off, made only with a little maple syrup of course. I have been giving slices away so not much left.

BEST PALEO BANANA BREAD EVER
The worst compliment you can get as a chef is "Ooo that tastes so healthy!" That usually means "That tastes bland and I hate it. You suck."

You won't get that awful response here. This looks, smells and tastes like the real banana bread you grew up eating. It would make a wonderful Valentine's day treat, whether with whipped cream for dessert or smeared with butter for breakfast. I plan on making mini loaves for Christmas gifts next year.

All the sweetness in this bread comes from the bananas. There is no honey, no maple syrup, nothing.

I added flax meal for Omega-3's, pecans because they're delicious and cinnamon because it is soul-warming. I use butter because it's awesome, but if you'd rather sub coconut oil, you can. You could exchange walnuts, chocolate or whatever you like in banana bread, but I highly recommend this exact combination.

This combination of arrowroot starch (flour), almond flour and coconut flour creates the best bread texture I've ever used while keeping it gluten free. It would fool a breadmaker. It is moist and held together perfectly (not crumbly and dry as many paleo breads are).

I am very proud of the way this turned out. I sincerely hope you enjoy this recipe as I did.

The Perfect Paleo Banana Bread
3 ripe bananas
4 Tablespoons (1/2 stick) butter, melted
3 large eggs
1 Tablespoon vanilla extract
1 1/4 cups almond flour
1/4 cup coconut flour
1/4 cup arrowroot starch
2 Tablespoons flax meal
1 teaspoon baking powder
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 cup pecans, chopped

Preheat the oven to 350º. Line a loaf pan with parchment paper or grease with butter. In a large bowl, mash the bananas with a potato masher or a large whisk. Mash them up really well. Whisk in the butter, eggs and vanilla, combining very well. In a medium bowl, whisk together the remaining dry ingredients, except the pecans. Make sure you break up all the flours (coconut flour tends to be especially clumpy). Stir the dry ingredients into the wet ingredients with a rubber spatula to combine. Stir in the pecans. Pour the batter into the pan and bake for 55 minutes, until golden brown and an inserted toothpick comes out clean.

This truely is a great banana bread and has no added sweetners to it.  Just the bananas!  I think the arrowroot starch makes it all more consistent.  Yum either way especially if you want to top it with some homemade whipped cream yes I said it homemade with just creme and a little maple syrup and it whips right up!

My Gorgeous Pregnant Niece....

SYSTEMIC INFLAMMATION AND CHRONIC DISEASE, EVEN FERTILITY

"Systemic inflammation----the body's response, through the production of white blood cells and other substances, to infection or other threats---is associated with nearly every modern chronic disease, from arthritis to Alzheimer's to autoimmune disorders to gastrointestinal diseases."  And to this list I would add cardiovascular disease, fertility, high cholesterol, and stress as it raises cortisol and the bodies response to this is an increase in white blood cell production.
Chris Kresser in his book, "Your Personal Paleo Code",  states this in his chapter about EPA and DHA,  essential fatty acids found primarily in fish or often referred to as Omega 3.  Inadequate intake of of EPA and DHA can cause systemic inflammation.  Eating lots of Omega 6 found in refined oils like corn, peanut, soy, safflower, sunflower, present in most processed foods has a pro-inflammatory effect found in everything from salad dressings to crackers to most restaurant foods.

Acupuncture reduces inflammation by releasing neurotransmitters from the brain to the sites of inflammation and reduces the overdrive effect of the immune system by taming it down and reducing the local inflammatory response via more blood flow or less depending on whether the condition is more chronic or acute.  It also regulates the production of hormones inclusive of cortisol the great stress hormone.  In addition, it improves the Mitochondria present in the DNA of the cell especially for division of the follicle into an 8 cell embryo.  These Mitochondria are the energy powerhouses of the cell and we now know that epigenetically(the ability to express or suppress certain genes good or bad), we can influence them in a positive way via diet, acupuncture, lifestyle, to improve the quality and response of this division.
